Baca County is a rural, agricultural region in southeastern Colorado that includes a short section of the historic Santa Fe Trail's Cimarron Route. More recently, the county was among the hardest hit during the 1930s "Dust Bowl," an event that precipitated a push by the Federal Government to purchase areas of cultivated land for soil conservation and subsequent rehabilitation to native grassland.
