Tallahassee Creek Inholding

Positioned in the Southern front-range mountains just west of Canon City, Colorado, this secluded and vacant 161acre in-holding property offers ultimate privacy and features a diverse landscape and habitat. Although the property is in a historically drier area, a 1 mile stretch of the year-round Tallahassee Creek supports an array of water, food, and shelter which attracts the Mule Deer and Elk that migrate through every fall. Unit 58 Mule Deer numbers and quality have been increasing, and Elk herds have been benefiting from RMEF conservation efforts in the nearby Waugh Mountain area. Most hunting tags are drawn with just 2 preference points, and the property meets the minimum requirement of 160 acres to be eligible for the Landowner Preference Propgram (vouchers that typically only require 0-1 points for most seasons). The property offers flat grassy meadows, clusters of Pinons and Cedars, a lush creek bottom of dense Cottonwoods and Willows, and a rugged canyon with steep rock outcroppings, boulder fields, waterfalls, and deep pools. Fishing opportunities can be had on Tallahassee Creek which supports a small fishery of Brook Trout and suckers, and the nearby Arkansas River and larger reserviors provide Blue Ribbon fishing.

HUNTING

GMU: 58

Wildlife Species: Elk, Mule Deer, Black Bear, Mountain Lion, Turkey, and small game.

Elk:

Migratory Elk of the Buffalo Peaks Herd make their way through the property each fall. The seclusion, forage, and most importantly, the water, attracts Elk to pay frequent visits throughout the later seasons. Steep ridges on either side of the property overlooking the creek bottom and open meadows provide excellent vantage points for rifle hunting. Bull Elk licenses are also valid in Unit 57. Unit 58 Elk harvest success rates range from 30-60% during rifle seasons, with Boone & Crockett level Bulls known in the area.

Mule Deer:

The abundant water and forage the property provides attracts migrating Mule Deer that take refuge in this area as hunting pressure ramps up in the OTC Elk hunting units that flank the East and North of this unit, creating great opportunities for the rifle seasons. The diverse terrain and tree cover present good opportunities for still hunting during the rifle seasons. Buck Mule Deer licenses are also valid in Units 49, 57, and 581. Mule Deer hunting success rates range from the low 40% to upper 60%, consistently producing Bucks that exceed Pope and Young entry-level scores.
