Greenlawn Memorial Park, established in 1888 in Newport News, Virginia, is a historic cemetery
spanning 50 acres. Its design reflects the 19th-century park-style movement, featuring winding
roads and natural landscapes. Central to the cemetery is a 25-foot obelisk, erected in 1900,
marking the mass grave of 163 Confederate POWs who died in 1865. The cemetery also
honors diverse communities, with sections dedicated to Greek citizens and adjacent to Pleasant
Shade Cemetery, a significant African American burial ground. Recognizing its cultural
importance, Greenlawn was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1999.
