HUME LAKE: The story on Hume Lake is that its hundreds of years old, and it was a naturally created lake that for hundreds of years existed naturally without any man-made dam. Local stories claim that around 85 to 90 years ago, neighboring farmers gathered with their rolling freznos pulled by mules and built a small dam which existed up until several years ago. That dam took the lake to a size near 50 acres in size. Several years ago, a large rain caused a breach in that dam, so a new-engineered and designed dam was constructed with a large overflow pipe system installed. While the lake was below natural level, the current owner was able to use a bulldozer to create some custom spawning areas, swim channels, a true island, land-fishing pier, and clean the brushy shoreline areas. The lake was also completely stocked from scratch with the best Florida-strain bass and bream populations available. The lake management practices in place are yielding 8-pound bass within 4 years of reconstruction and stocking efforts. As management efforts continue, it will be commonplace to catch double-digit Florida Largemouth Bass and Bream as big as a frying pan! The lake is now approximately 54 acres in size and sits as the prize gem of this property, nestled directly underneath the hill of the main house!
THE CATFISH LAKE AND MIDDLE LAKE: These two lakes were constructed in 2002 and are approximately 26 acres (catfish lake) and 20 acres (middle lake). Construction was done under the directions of a fish biologist and owner of the Tyler Fish Farm. Numerous brush piles were established before closing the dams. Bulldozers and track hoes were used to dig 10 to 15-foot holes and ravines around the brush piles for fish habitat. The middle lake features two islands used for Canada goose nesting habitat. Four-hundred one-foot PVC pipe pieces were placed around the edges of both lakes for minnows and baitfish to spawn and produce 4 to 5 times the number of offspring otherwise. The current owner utilizes fish feeders from late winter through fall to feed the bait fish in order to continue their thriving populations. The middle lake boasts an 11 lb 4 oz bass and the catfish lake boasts a bass near the 11-pound mark as well. Too many bass between 5 and 10 pounds have been caught off these lakes to even try to keep count.
LAND: The land consists of approximately 500 acres of beautiful, rolling and highly improved Coastal Bermuda hay meadows great for grazing or cutting for hay production. The hay production on the property enables the property to fall within the ag-exemption status for tax purposes, making a drastic reduction in the taxable market value. Catfish creek meanders through the western portion of the property and feeds the catfish lake. There are numerous natural springs that feed the lakes on the property. There are also 3 small ponds throughout that could serve as additional water tanks. There is a large runoff area in the middle of the property that could be dammed off and potentially create an additional 7 to 15-acre lake! There is also an area near the large barn that could be utilized as an approximately 3,000-foot long grass landing strip!
WILDLIFE: This ranch is full of native wildlife and opportunities to watch or hunt are numerous throughout! This is one of the best wild-hog hunting ranches in all of east Texas!Entertain guests in the evenings as numerous hogs, whitetail deer, bobcat, coyote, and other small game rush to the feeders, both of which can be viewed from the back of the main house! When the ducks are here for the winter, get ready! Excellent duck hunting can occur on any and all of the water sources throughout the property. The bass fishing is trophy class by anyones standards as trophy-sized Florida Bass are a common place on each of the three lakes!
