History
Lander was established in 1884 and was traditionally home to the Shoshone People. Lander was named for Colonel F. W. Lander. Ranching, lumber, oil wells, iron ore, uranium, and coal mines have been its economic assets. Just north of Lander is the Wind River Indian Reservation where Sacagawea’s grave can be found. Just southwest of Lander you can find Sinks Canyon State Park and the Shoshone National Forrest, and 32 miles away the historic town of South Pass, a landmark known on the Oregon Trail, can be found.
Location
Lander, Wyoming is located in the west central part of the state along the Middle Fork of the Popo Agie River. Lander sits at a high desert elevation of 5,358 ft. and is known for Sinks Canyon State Park. Lander has a population around 7,500 and is the County Seat of Fremont County, Wyoming. NOLS, or the National Outdoor Leadership School resides in Lander as well as the Wyoming Catholic College. CWC (Central Wyoming College) also hosts a campus in Lander, while the main campus can be found a 30 minute drive away in Riverton.
